Marketed internationally as Zadaxin, it's an approved prescription drug in more than 30 countries for specific immune-related uses — but it has never been evaluated or approved by the FDA, and there is no legitimate U.S. compounding pathway for it.

The Evidence
Pivotal hepatitis B trials
A 1998 randomized controlled trial in 98 chronic hepatitis B patients found a complete virologic response in about 41% of those treated with Thymosin Alpha-1 versus roughly 9% of untreated controls; a later Phase 3 trial (Chien et al., 2006) found a 36% sustained virologic response versus about 20% for placebo at 72 weeks.
Scale of the international evidence base
A 2024 narrative review compiled data spanning more than 11,000 patients across over 30 clinical trials internationally, and broader data compilations describe evaluation in more than 4,400 patients across 80-plus trials spanning hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV adjunct therapy, cancer immunotherapy, sepsis, and vaccine-response enhancement.
U.S. regulatory status
Despite this international trial volume, Thymosin Alpha-1 has never been FDA-approved in the U.S.; it holds FDA Orphan Drug designation for hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatitis B, which signals regulatory interest but is not itself an approval.
