Overview

What it is.

Glutathione is a tripeptide the body produces naturally and uses throughout its cells for antioxidant defense and detoxification-pathway function. It's one of the most established compounds in cellular-longevity research.

Research Deep-Dive

How it works.

Glutathione is a small tripeptide the body produces naturally in every cell, where it serves as a central antioxidant and detoxification cofactor. It's one of the more established compounds in licensed wellness and longevity medicine, commonly compounded and administered in IV and injectable forms.

Glutathione neutralizes reactive oxygen species and supports the liver's phase-II detoxification pathways; it's also studied for its ability to inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme that drives melanin production, which is the basis for its use in skin-tone-focused protocols.

Use Cases Explored

  • Studied for a potential role in cellular antioxidant defense
  • Studied for a potential role in skin tone and clarity
  • Studied for a potential role in supporting the body's detoxification pathways

The Evidence

Pilot skin-lightening trial (IV route)

A small, open-label pilot study of 22 women receiving ten weekly doses of IV glutathione found measurable decreases in melanin index readings — but it lacked a placebo arm and used a small, homogeneous sample.

2025 systematic reviews — route-dependent efficacy and safety

A 2025 narrative review found oral glutathione shows variable but statistically significant melanin reduction with limited side effects, topical forms show modest benefit, while IV glutathione — despite acting quickly — carries the most serious documented safety concerns, including anaphylaxis and liver toxicity, with no standardized dosing protocol across studies.

2025 dermatology systematic review — cautionary conclusion

A 2025 review in the International Journal of Dermatology concluded that IV glutathione specifically is not well supported for skin-lightening efficacy relative to its safety risks, and that it may function better as an antioxidant adjunct in conditions like melasma than as a reliable whitening agent on its own.

Regulatory safety warnings

Both the FDA and dermatology regulators in the Philippines have issued specific warnings about the injectable route because of documented cases of anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and kidney/liver dysfunction tied to compounded injectable glutathione.
